Riding for Camp Good Sam

I'm happy to announce that the details have been worked out, and this summer, I'm riding for a worthy charity! Camp Good Samaritan is a non-profit organization that puts on summer camps for underpriveliged children.

Any educator will tell you a child's environment outside of school is as important as their environment in school, if not more so. During summer, the effects of these differences are greatly amplified. Children with an intellectually stimulating home environment, whether from a stay-at-home parent or excellent (expensive) child care, often continue to progress during the summer months away from school. In the meantime, their less fortunate peers, often left at home alone, regress. During the school year, all types of students make progress, but after a handful of summers, the less fortunate students are behind their peers by more than a grade level before they even make it to middle school.

Camp Good Samaritan corrects this disparity by organizing summer camps for these children, which includes literature-based programs, hands-on activities, career speakers, college campus visits, and theatre performances. Providing these enriching activities - things the students want to learn about - keeps their brains from taking a few months off and better prepares them for life.

Give 'em a hand - Camp Good Sam is a non-profit on a tight budget, and they make sure every dollar helps the kids and goes a long way. If you're not sure how much to give, try $40 - that's one penny for every km I'll ride.
