Coyote

From:
North Texas

Price, UT

Elevation: 5,603 ft.
Distance: 74.1 mi.
Odometer: 2,208.2 mi.

I had seen on a terrain map that today would be hilly, and I'd seen on an elevation profile that the first 45 miles were one long uphill. I knew that today had the potential to be one of the toughest days of the ride. A five-mile stretch of 30 mph headwind early in the day only confirmed my suspicions and put me in my place.

Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Sure, it really was a 45-mile uphill, and there were a few times that I was moving only 7-8 mph for miles at a time, but there wasn't any part that was so steep it seemed impossible. The headwind was the worst part, and that was in a flat section. I think the mental preparation made a big difference. Crested the hill at 7,500 feet and made good time going downhill for 20 miles, though the headwind reappeared and kept me from going as fast as I would've liked.

Asked for a floor and a roof at the Christian Missionary Church and wound up with a hotel room instead, including free breakfast! Thanks, pastors Dan and Jared!
